There are soooo many old wives' tales out there about pregnancy and conception in general, but that's nothing compared to the OWT's about what gender your baby may or may not be.
I decided to take some of the most common ones and answer them (with the help of Scott) so that in a few weeks we can see just how accurate they are.
Where are you carrying?
Most Web sites agree that if you're carrying high, it's a girl and if you're carrying low it's all boy. I've just recently started to expand to a nice round belly, so I don't know if we're far enough along to judge this one, but Scott says I'm carrying low.
Boy:1 Girl: 0
What are you craving?
OWT's insist that a mother-to-be who craves sweets is having a girl while craving sour things means it's a boy. This one's complicated. I survived my first trimester sucking on sour Jolly Ranchers, but I HAVE to have two or three cookies 'n' creme milkshakes a week (I'm having one right now), plus I go through a giant bag of M&Ms each week. But in general, I'm craving spicy foods, believe it or not. We might just get some hot wings tonight. Scott says more sour than sweet, so we're going with boy on this one.
Boy: 2 Girl: 0
Thumper
Most OWT's agree that if the baby's heartbeat is 140 or below, it's a boy while if it's 141 and above, it's a girl.
Our baby's little thump-thump has been consistently in the 150s these past couple of months.
Boy: 2 Girl: 1
How you lookin?
This one made me crack up. Apparently, if you're having a girl, the baby "steals" all of your beauty, giving you dull hair, acne and other "bleh" moments while women carrying boys tend to have more of that motherly glow.
Scott told me I looked beautiful (aww) but I feel soooo not pretty lately. I'm going girl on this one.
Boy: 2 Girl: 2
Where's the baby fat?
OWT's say that women carrying a boy carry it all in the belly while girl babies spread the wealth all over the body, to the hips and other areas. I'm all belly so far.
Boy: 3 Girl: 2
Chinese gender predictor test
If you google a chinese gender predictor test, you'll find out that someone (I don't know, like me, hypothetically?) that was 25 years old when they conceived and did said conception in the month of November that the baby will be a boy.
I've heard another one, however, that said if the mother's age and the year are both odd or even (25, 2009) it will be a girl.
One each.
Boy: 4 Girl: 3
Swing round and round?
This one was fun. You take a string (some sites insist it MUST have the mother's wedding ring attached) and hold it over the mother's belly. If it goes side-to-side, it's a girly girl on the way. If the string goes in circles, it's a baby boy. Ours most definitely went side to side.
Boy: 4 Girl: 4
Well, wouldn't you know? All tied up.
What do you think? Have you seen me devouring huge amounts of sweets lately? Do I look like a watermelon or basketball? Do you have a gut feeling about buying some pink onesies in a month or two?
For all you moms -- did your pregnancy follow the old wives' tales? More importantly, how was your mother's intuition? (I've heard it's right in 70 percent of women).
Pink or blue? Guess we'll find out for sure in TWO weeks!!!
